Frequently asked questions

A. Services that are provided to users via the Internet leveraging a cloud provider’s server platform at scale, as opposed to a company’s own on-premise servers. Cloud services are designed to provide scalable, flexible, and easy access to applications and resources. Depending on the type of cloud service selected, many aspects of the solution will be managed by the cloud provider as opposed to the customer themselves.
A. There are different types of cloud services available based on the level of control and responsibility a business desires over their information and services. The three main types of cloud services include:

  1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
This type of service lets a business use the cloud provider’s IT infrastructure such as servers, virtual machines, storage, and network. The operating system and the applications remain in the responsibility of a customer. Examples include Microsoft Azure and CodeBlue VPS
  2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
In addition to the Infrastructure, the cloud provider also takes responsibility for the operating system and other tools and components. This type of service lets a business focus on developing mobile and web applications accessible via the Internet. Examples include, Web Servers or App Engines provided by the likes of Microsoft or Google.
  3. Software as a Service (SaaS)
This type of service is used to deliver software applications over the Internet with cloud provider managing the end-to-end solution. This lets a customer focus on configuring and utilising an application as per their requirements. Examples include Microsoft 365 solutions and other business applications, like Xero and Salesforce.
A. Businesses that migrate to the cloud experience agility, flexibility and resiliency. This allows businesses to deploy rapidly, respond faster to changes in demand, better support their business continuity, disaster recovery plans and compliance requirements.

Cloud solutions, such as Microsoft 365 provides the ability to share and easily collaborate not only within a business but with customers and suppliers remotely. Other benefits include secure, up-to-date systems using state of the art protection methods and with the flexible consumption-based pricing, your business is only paying for what is used.

A. It is natural to wonder if your data is safe when it’s stored in the cloud infrastructure. After all, key information about your company and your client’s data are being stored on servers that are not under your direct control.

If implemented correctly, the security measures cloud services providers invest in are likely to be more robust and powerful than what you currently have protecting your business computers and devices. Backup and long-term data retention is an important consideration and one to watch for, as this is often an add-on or left to the responsibility of a customer.

A. One of the key characteristics of data stored in the cloud is that you can access it from anywhere, all you need is an adequate Internet connection. Depending on the service, you may also have access to your data offline by keeping a copy of your files on your local computer. Any changes that you make to the local files will sync to the cloud once you connect back to the Internet. Understanding how the service will function when offline and ensuring it meets your needs, is an important consideration.
